Vocations' Open Day
The Diocese of Cork and Ross will host a major vocations open day on Saturday in Saint Dominic's Retreat Centre in Ennismore, County Cork.
According to the Bishop of Cork and Ross Dr John Buckley, one of the features of the day is that it will be attended by current clerical students for the Diocese of Cork and Ross in Maynooth. He said that, “those who have attended such days in the past have indicated to us that they really appreciated been able to talk to our current seminarians.”
In launching the initiative, Bishop Buckley also said, “Sometimes people are reluctant in making the first step into exploring the possibility of a vocation to the priesthood.” This day he said, “allows prospective students to do that in an informal setting.”
“the need for more vocations to the priesthood for the Diocese of Cork and Ross is an urgent one. This need is not diluted in any way be the hugely important work of involving the laity more fully in the parishes of the Diocese. Indeed in recent times, parish assemblies have been discussing and planning for fewer priests in the future.”
Bishop Buckley also stressed that the reality is that, “our church is sacramental and that there is no church without Eucharist and no Eucharist without the priest.”
The Diocese of Cork and Ross currently has five students studying for the priesthood, four in the Irish Seminary in Maynooth and one in the Irish College in Rome. One of their students, Anthony Buckley will be ordained on Saturday June 4.
The Open Day 11:00am to 5:00pm.
