Launch of the "Year of the Family of St. John of God"
In Rome, last Sunday, the Order launched “The Year of the Family of Saint John of God” with a seminar that was attended by 90 people. The program began with celebration of the Eucharist. The Prior General gave the opening address during which he underlined the importance of the year ahead as an instrument of renewal and creating an awareness of the importance of the mission of Hospitality to which we are all committed. Then two Co-workers and two Brothers shared their experiences of being a member of the Family of Saint John of God. Their stories were well received and stimulated some very lively and interesting discussion.
After the luncheon break there was the first presentation of a a DVD on the Family of Saint John of God (see the cover above). Then the seminar continued with a PowerPoint presentation of the Order worldwide. This was followed by discussion and the seminar ended at 5.30 p.m.
The Vatican newspaper, “L’Osservatore Romano” has published extracts from the Prior General’s letter for the Feast of Saint John of God and commented approvingly on the Order’s promotion of “The Family of Saint John of God”. The same journal has reported the opening of the Saint Benedict Menni Centre, the new administrative block of the Tiber Island hospital, on 8 March. The Mayor of Rome was quoted as referring to the hospital as the ‘Jewel of Rome’ for the hospitable environment and services that it offers to the citizens of the ‘Eternal City’.
